About the Role
We are seeking a dynamic and knowledgeable Canva Subject Matter Expert (SME) to play a key role in the development of a certification program focused on advanced Canva design and utilization. The successful candidate will leverage their deep expertise in Canva's features, design principles, and best practices to shape the curriculum, create engaging training materials, and empower learners with practical skills in graphic design, visual communication, and content creation using Canva. This role requires a strong passion for education, excellent communication skills, and the ability to effectively convey complex design concepts and software functionalities.
As this is a freelance position, we're seeking individuals with a proven track record of successfully managing freelance engagements and multiple client relationships.
Project Duration:
- Hours: Approximately 360 hours in total. Weekly hours will vary between 5-15 hours depending on the project stage.
- Start Date: August 2025
- End Date: Mid-February 2026
- Time Zone Requirement: Availability during US Eastern Standard Time (EST) business hours is required.
Hourly rate: Negotiable
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with a team of learning experience designers to help create and validate training materials related to Canva.
- Review a skills task or job task analysis for accuracy and completeness, providing feedback on essential vs. nice-to-know tasks in Canva and suggesting improvements.
- Review a high-level program outline and provide feedback on the order and complexity of Canva topics for the intended audience.
- Review a detailed program outline, ensuring alignment with the high-level program outline, and helping to confirm that Canva content is presented in the correct order and format.
- Validate AI-generated content to ensure it conforms to learning objectives and is technically accurate regarding Canva functionalities and design principles.
- Support creation of content-specific graphics such as tables, flow charts, and screen captures directly within Canva or for use in Canva-related demonstrations.
- Create any assets required to make demonstrations that showcase specific procedures, design techniques, and advanced features within Canva.
- Create recordings of Canva software demonstrations and related audio scripts.
- Coordinate with learning experience designers to build out the assets, steps, and technical elements needed for hands-on projects, exercises, labs, and capstone projects using Canva.
- Be available during US business hours, M-F, for content reviews, questions, and occasional meetings.

Required Skills & Experience
- Proven hands-on experience designing, creating, and managing a wide range of visual content using Canva (e.g., social media graphics, presentations, marketing materials, videos, websites, documents).
- Extensive practical experience implementing advanced Canva features such as Brand Kits, Magic Studio tools (Magic Design, Magic Write, Magic Edit, Magic Expand), team collaboration features, and custom template creation.
- Demonstrated ability to leverage Canva for various design needs, including understanding of graphic design principles (typography, color theory, layout, composition) as applied within the Canva environment.
- Experience in creating engaging and effective visual communication strategies using Canva.
- Practical experience with designing for different platforms and formats (web, print, social media, video) within Canva.
- Familiarity with best practices for optimizing Canva designs for various outputs and ensuring brand consistency.
- Experience in reviewing training materials for technical accuracy and clarity related to Canva.
- A strong understanding of adult learning principles is a plus.
- Essential experience in training, learning, and development, or teaching, specifically with design software or visual communication.
- Proven ability to create and deliver effective screencasts and video tutorials demonstrating Canva functionalities.
- Strong ability to articulate complex design concepts and software functionalities in an accessible manner.
- Availability to work during the US time zones' business hours.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Marketing, Communications, Education, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- 5+ years of hands-on experience designing, building, and deploying visual content using Canva, including proficiency in advanced features, team collaboration, and template creation.
- Demonstrable expertise with key Canva features and applications, such as Magic Studio, Brand Kit, Canva Print, Canva Websites, and advanced design techniques.
- Practical understanding and application of design principles (e.g., UI/UX basics, visual hierarchy, accessibility in design) within the Canva ecosystem.
- 2+ years of experience in technical training, learning & development, or teaching, with a proven ability to create, review, and deliver high-quality, technically accurate training materials (e.g., course outlines, hands-on exercises, video tutorials) focused on Canva.
- Exceptional technical communication skills, including the ability to articulate complex design concepts clearly to diverse audiences, and a strong understanding of adult learning principles.
