About the Opportunity  

Location: Costa Rica
Contract Type: Freelance
Project Duration: 6 months with possible renewal for 12 months
Project Capacity: 10 hours per week

SweetRush is a remote organization, and as such, all resources must be technically savvy, have access to a strong internet signal, be comfortable with virtual/instant messaging and conferencing tools, and generally be available during established working hours.

Your Impact and Responsibilities 

The Systems Administrator/Desktop Support role is responsible for managing and supporting the organization’s IT infrastructure, including servers, networks, and end-user devices. This position combines systems administration with desktop support to ensure optimal performance and user satisfaction.

  • Install, configure, and maintain servers, workstations, and network devices.
  • Support the PM/PdM team by creating SourceFile Packages.
  • Support the PM/PdM team by creating SVN folders in the source control system.
  • Security patch servers/software twice daily through automation scripts or manually where scripting is not possible.
  • Provide technical support to end-users, troubleshooting hardware and software issues.
  • Monitor system performance and implement necessary upgrades and patches.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions, and access controls.
  • Ensure data backup and recovery processes are in place and functioning.
  • Document IT processes and maintain an inventory of IT assets.

What You Bring - Required Skills 

Server & Workstation Support

  • Setting up, configuring, and maintaining end-user workstations and peripherals
  • Basic server maintenance tasks under senior admin guidance (reboots, service checks, disk/log cleanup)
  • Familiarity with Windows Server and/or Linux fundamentals
  • Basic networking concepts: TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPN

Source Control & PM/PdM Support

  • Creating and organizing SVN repository folders following established structure/conventions
  • Assembling SourceFile Packages per documented procedures
  • Basic understanding of version control concepts (commits, branches, permissions)

Patch Management

  • Applying routine security patches using existing automation scripts/tools
  • Manually installing patches on systems where scripting isn't available, following documented steps
  • Basic scripting familiarity (PowerShell and/or Bash) — able to run and modify existing scripts
  • Following change-management or patch-schedule procedures

Account & Access Management

  • Creating, modifying, and disabling user accounts in Active Directory
  • Assigning permissions/group memberships based on established access policies
  • Basic understanding of least-privilege and role-based access concepts

Monitoring & Backups

  • Checking system/backup job status using existing monitoring tools
  • Escalating performance issues or failed backups to senior staff
  • Basic understanding of backup schedules and restore procedures

Desktop Support & Troubleshooting

  • Diagnosing and resolving common hardware issues (desktops, laptops, printers, peripherals)
  • Troubleshooting common Windows/macOS software issues
  • Working within a ticketing/helpdesk system (e.g., ServiceNow, Jira Service Desk, Zendesk)
  • Clear, patient communication with non-technical end users

Documentation

  • Following and updating existing IT process documentation/runbooks
  • Keeping IT asset inventory records current  

 Bonus Skills [Skills that are not required but would be a nice to have]

  • CompTIA A+ / Network+
  • Exposure to Active Directory / Group Policy in a lab or prior role
  • Basic PowerShell or Bash scripting experience
